We spent Thanksgiving Week in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, USA. I found myself intrinsically connected to the sea while there, not only the sea though, there were deeper connections to all the elements Earth, Air, Fire, and Water.
Theories involving the Four Elements seem to permeate virtually all cultures throughout the known world. It is by the continual cycling and recycling of energy through the infinite permutations of Earth, Air, Fire, and Water that ordinary, mundane reality comes into existence. The teachings of the Elements have been around for centuries, and it can be reasonably concluded that these concepts are fundamental to human thought. Throughout history, philosophers and mystics have emphasized that the Four Elements are the essential, underlying realities that, through their infinite transpositions, give rise to both the macrocosm and the microcosm, encompassing both man himself—his body, mind, and soul—and the entire Universe.
While staying at Oregon Inlet Campground we intensionally walked the beach nearly everyday watching and listening to waves and birds. Our site was invigorating or relaxing depending on the pace of a three to seven minute walk to the beach!
How could I possibly miss the Earth Element on the Cape Hatteras seashore. The Earth Element illustrates its magnificent power in the Outer Bank dunes of Cape Hatteras. As for the four directions that often relate to the Elements, Earth is usually found in the North in the ways of Druidry though it is sometimes in the West. Symbols and concepts associated with the Earth Element include grounding, foundation, ‘earthiness’, strength and sustenance. The physical body identifies with growth, nature, density, fertility, food. There are feminine qualities associated with the Earth like nurturing, the Earth Mother. The area dunes of Cape Hatteras personify the Earth Element. They shift so much over time the years, that some structures have been covered by the shifting sands where we can learn that life itself, like the Earth, is constantly shifting as well. Jung theory says memory itself can be viewed as a “landscape of shifting sands,” where each recollection has the potential to reshape an individual’s understanding of their own identity. How much has our own identity shifted to a more solid foundation through the years, shifting enough to open, uncover, and unveil our authentic self. Connect with the Earth frequently. This can be done by walking barefoot upon the Earth, digging your toes into the sand or deeper ground. Then there’s even dirt time, working in the yard. So, take time to connect with the Earth Element.
Then there was the Element of Air, ahh the salt air found onshore of the ocean, it permeates our being bringing with it a deep connection with Spirit. Air as an Element is typically associated with the East. Air, or breath, plays an important role in QiGong. The practice of QiGong focuses on air through the breath. Controlled breathing and gentle movements cultivate “qi” or “life energy,” The word “qi” can also mean “air”. Deep, slow breathing is a fundamental component, with techniques like abdominal breathing and exercises that coordinate breath with body movements to improve physical and mental well-being. This focus on breath is believed to help oxygenate the body, calm the mind, and enhance the flow of energy throughout the body. The Element of Air embraced me while taking in the other three elements on a seashore. To say it was a bit breezy during our Thanksgiving stay would be an understatement. While in our camper a couple sand dunes away from the Atlantic Ocean, we were abruptly awakened one night as a weather front passed through with powerful winds shaking our camper to the proverbial core and right down to rattling the overhead vent of the camper. I listened (hard to ignore) to the powerfully immense winds batter our little camper to the point that I respectfully asked for and received protection. A sense of calm with a spirit of protection from the powerful winds lent its comfort. This caused me to think on how our spirit, sometimes… sometimes mind you, can usher in powerful inner feelings that pass right thorough our consciousness to subconscious soul. Try connecting to the Element of Air. We saw several examples including people flying kites at the Outer Banks. Try practicing breathing techniques on your own, like square breathing, remember taking four seconds to take a long deep breath in, hold your breath for another four count, exhale in a four count, and hold again for another four count. Try the protocol four times in a session. This is focused breathing that can bring about calmness relaxation relief from stress and anxiety. Connect with the Element of Air.
While staying at the Outer Banks, I made it a point to watch the sun rise as it breached the eastern horizon every morning both indoors through the camper window and outside. One morning I decided to capture the drama and beauty of sunrise that created an unanticipated deep connection to the sun along with its emitted magick. That connection touched me… heart, spirit, and soul collectively. The Sun as Fire Element radiated, surrounded, and captivated my very being. The English Physician and Philosopher Robert Fludd wrote, “The finest and most volatile of the four material elements is fire, and it naturally rises to the outermost region of the elemental sphere. Although closely related by position and quality to the ethereal substance of the celestial sphere, this is not the ‘invisible fire’ of the philosophers by which they say all things were made. It is simply the hot, dry fire by which all things are eventually led to putrefaction.” (Robert Fludd, 17th c). The Element of Fire is found in the South. The qualities of Fire include energies associated with the positive, light, sight, the masculine and even transmutation like that represented by the Phoenix. The Phoenix which occurs in Central American, Eastern and European myth sets itself alight every hundred years, and rises from the ashes after three days. The heart chakra in the human body is associated with Fire. For an exercise to connect with the Element of Fire, concentrate on a candle flame, fire, or burning incense. This can help in developing powers of concentration and psychic sight. While performing the exercise, feel yourself as made of glowing fire – become a Being of Gold. Concentrate on the chakras feeling fire within each. Visualize yourself floating, wrapped in fire colors, especially gold. And so, connect with the Fire Element.
The sounds of ocean waves embraced me with the wonders of the Water
Element which usually occupies the West in the four directions (sometimes in the North). So many thoughts come to mind when I think of Water. There are the cleansing and purifying qualities. It is the second important rule for survival of shelter, water, fire, food. Feminine consciousness is associated with water as is the subconscious along with emotions, moon, goddess, night, woman. Emotions such as love, feeling, sensitivity, receptivity, passivity. Also the Soul are identified with water as is the magical virtue, To Know. Seeing both the massive power in the cresting and crashing waves as they united and blended with the shore, cleansing me outwardly. The waved cleansed me from within when I simply closed my eyes to hear them and felt them glide and envelope my feet, initiating healing on so many levels.
Within the scope of Druidry the term Nwyfre is a magical term. It expresses the “life force” or energy we find in the world around us similar to the expression of Qi found in Chinese philosophy and medicine. That same circulating life force, whose existence and properties, are the very basis of life itself. Like many facets of our existence Nwyfre needs to be nurtured, fed, and stimulated. When Nwyfre is so cultivated, our awareness and sensitivity to the natural world combined with the four elements are intrinsically rooted within our being making us more complete and able to appreciate the blessings.
Resilience also comes to mind as I think on our week’s adventure. Resilience commences to face challenges we meet along life’s journey, successfully adapting to stressors, maintaining psychological well-being in the face of adversity. Resilience provides the ability to “bounce back” from difficult experiences. The ocean waves and combined winds batter the shoreline, yet it remains. The shoreline may shift, but with resilience, the shoreline remains. The flora and fauna both adjust to meet the challenges of the Outer Banks, yet they remain as we too can remain resilient in life because of our deeper connections with the Natural World.
Our journey to the Outer Banks made a comforting powerful wonderful impression upon my heart, spirit, and soul. It’s another connection with the Natural World. That and other similar connections to the Natural World nurtures our own well-being. These connections like secret passages to our heart, spirit, and soul help us discover new pathways that usher in a new sense of awareness, understanding and… awakening. These connections can positively influence blood pressure. Stress and tension reduce within our being. We feel more alive and rejuvenated.
Though now back home in the Appalachian mountains of Western North Carolina, the memories and lessons experienced while in the Outer Banks will remain with Nwyfre feeling more nurtured. The comforting beauty that also remains, well that same experience can be relived within using my imagination. And imagination, that opens countless opportunities in our current reality when we are ready.
Every element experienced played their part while we visited the Outer Banks. The Fire Element evidenced in the Sun with all its majesty in sunrises for the possible opportunities of a new day. The Element of Water displayed itself majestically in the Ocean and her waves of power as they ebb and flow. Both gentle and powerful Winds dramatically illustrated the Element of Air. The Dunes, shifting, adapting, and ever changing shared the same qualities found in the Element of Earth.
I leave you with a thought, no matter where you may be, the elements of Fire, Water, Winds, and Earth are always present to help as our guides, providers, teachers, and friends as we journey Toward Our Own Better Life.
